Polars Bears sweep Wilmington

The Wilmington College baseball team dropped an Ohio Athletic Conference to Ohio Northern Thursday at Tewksbury-Delaney Field on the WC campus.

Ohio Northern scored in each of the first six innings as they claimed the opener 11-4. The Polar Bears scored in three of the first four innings en route to completing the sweep with the 15-4 victory in the nightcap.

After the Polar Bears took the lead with two in the top of the first inning, Wilmington quickly answered. Clay Cleaver (Pleasant Plain, OH/Little Miami) opened with a single and stole second. Alec Hutzelman (Centerville, OH/Centerville) put runners on the corners with a single, and Brandon Arehart (Wilmington, OH/Wilmington) brought home a run with a groundout.

A two-out single by Roenick Whitney (Goshen, OH/Goshen) evened the score at two. It didn't stay tied long as ONU put up single runs in the second and third innings. Once again, the Fightin' Quakers battled back.

Hunter Justus (Circleville, OH/Logan Elm) doubled home a run, and then scored the tying run on a single by Whitney. However, ONU scored the final seven runs.

Jake Vinkovich (Circleville, OH/Circleville) fell to 0-5 on the season, allowing five runs (four earned) on five hits in three innings of work. He yielded six walks with no strikeouts. Justus, Hulzelman and Whitney all had two hits for the Quakers.

Wilmington was down 12-0 before getting on the board thanks to three-run blast of the bat of Roenick in the sixth. Back-to-back one-out singles from Arehart and Justus came before the mammoth shot. Schwalbach added an RBI single in the ninth.

Tyler Schrock (Waynesville, OH/Waynesville) allowed nine earned runs on eight hits in 2 1/3 innings.
