ALLIANCE, Ohio - The Wilmington College women's swimming team opened the New Year with a narrow 153-102 defeat at the hands of the University of Mount Union in an Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) dual on Saturday.

"We are coming off of a couple weeks of great training that has tired them out, and that showed in the races today," Head Women's Swimming Coach Trip Breen said. "I am pleased overall with our performance, but we need to perform better and continue to fine tune for the upcoming OAC Championship meet in mid-February."

Macki Leon won two events and finished runner-up in another on Saturday. The junior won the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:18.56 and also won the 100-yard IM by touching the pad at 1:05.82. Her teammate, freshman Fynn Roberts, finished second in the 100-yard IM with a time of 1:11.76. That would prove to be one of Roberts' three runner-up places as she turned in times of 34.99 in the 50-yard breaststroke and 2:40.43 in the 200-yard breaststroke. Leon's second-place finish came in the 200-yard freestyle (2:06.24).

Margaret Hover also won an event for the Fightin' Quakers, swimming a time of 57.55 seconds in the 100-yard freestyle. She also took second in the 1,650-yard freestyle (19:58.80). Hannah Davis came less than half of a second away from winning the 50-yard freestyle with her time of 26.56 seconds. The junior also earned second place in the 50-yard butterfly (28.93 seconds).

Wilmington went one-two in the 200-yard freestyle relay as Hover, Anna Endsley, Davis and Leon won the event with a time of a 1:47.32. The Quaker squad of Ashely Carlson, Alyssa Harper, Audrey Holt and Olivia Bender completed the event in 2:00.92 and took second.

"We are looking forward to our Senior Day meet and one more opportunity to compete before the OAC Championships," said Breen.

That Senior Day meet is scheduled for next Saturday (Jan. 25) against John Carroll University.
