WILMINGTON, Ohio – Capital University held the Wilmington College women's soccer team scoreless to spoil Senior Night and defeat the Fightin' Quakers 3-0 in an Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) game played at a rain-soaked Williams Stadium on Wednesday evening.
The Crusaders nearly scored in the 13th minute as Carlee Murry ran on a through ball down the near side line. Wilmington's goalkeeper, Lauren Galloway, charged as well, but Murry beat her to the ball and had an empty net in front. Fortunately for the hosts, Murry's momentum was carrying her to the right, and the shot followed that pattern and hit the side netting.
Capital (13-5-0, 6-2-0 OAC) opened the scoring in the 25th minute on a set piece. Allyssa Kimbler sent a cross into the box, and at about the penalty spot, Jayde Hoffmann rose up and headed the ball into the lower corner for her first goal of the season. That goal would prove to be the only one of the first half.
Wilmington opened the second half on the offensive as Maddy Scott possessed several times deep in Crusader territory. She earned a corner kick for the Quakers in the first minute of the second half. Riley Allison's corner found the head of Haley Burge, who attempted to do just what Hoffmann did and sent a header low and in the corner. Capital's goalkeeper, Kelly Bachmann, was there to make the diving save and keep the shutout intact.
Less than 10 minutes later, the Crusaders doubled their lead as Olivia Rotolo broke loose down the near sideline and sent a cross in that found Murry, who made amends for her first-half miss by firing a low shot in the corner.
Capital added one final goal on a long-distance strike from Avery Hart in the 68th minute.
The Crusaders held a 15-5 edge in shots including by a 9-3 margin in shots on goal. The visitors also earned three corners kicks compared to two for Wilmington.
Five different Quakers took a shot with Carlie Brooks, Burge, Madison Wiedeman and Courtney Ryan earning shots on goal.
Wilmington (8-7-1, 3-5-0 OAC) concludes its 2019 regular season at John Carroll University on Saturday. A win vaults the Quakers into the OAC Tournament for the first time since 2015.
