Kingsbery with first career double-double in loss

TIFFIN, OH – The Wilmington College women's basketball team trailed for most of the game in falling to Heidelberg, 84-67, Tuesday in Ohio Athletic Conference action inside Seiberling Gymnasium.

It's the first time Wilmington has lost to the Student Princes in regular season action. The Fightin' Quakers had won 28 straight games against HC with their only loss coming in the 2001 OAC Tournament. WC is now 30-2 all-time against Heidelberg.

"They came out in the first half of the first half and shot the heck out of the ball," said Wilmington head coach Jerry Scheve. "We didn't play particularly bad on the defensive end, they were just a hot team. In the second half of the half, our defense let down some and gave them some easy baskets."

Heidelberg built a lead as high as 18 in the first half before WC went on a run, trimming its deficit to six points. Each time Wilmington seemingly gained traction – the Student Princes had a spurt pushing its lead back to double figures.

The Student Princes shot a 54.8 percent from the field, including 6-of-11 from three-point range, in the first half to take a 12-point halftime lead. HC made 49.2 percent over the span of the game.  They didn't make a single triple in the second half. Meanwhile, Wilmington shot 36.2 percent for the game.

Wilmington made some changes to start the second half, starting junior Alexandria Kingbery (Lima, OH/Central Catholic) and freshman Lexi Weber (Clyde, OH/Clyde). They were instrumental as the Fightin Quakers trimmed its halftime deficit to just four points. However, WC couldn't make a play to get it down to a one-possession deficit.

"(Weber) is someone that has been slowed by injuries," said Scheve. "She has practiced well over the last couple of weeks, and she played well for us. She is going to have a bright future for us."

Kingsbery recorded her first career double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, both career best efforts.

"(Kingsbery) played well. She came out and competed, and got us some baskets and rebounds," said Scheve. "We know (Kingsbery) can contribute offensively, and if she can continue to improve defensively, she will be a player for us."

Senior Courtney Tucker (Cincinnati, OH/Sycamore) tallied a team-high 12 points with four steals.

Sophomore Brittaney Jefferson (Dayton, OH/Chaminade Julienne) finished with 10 points, while freshman Shelby Mulliken (Walton, OH/Walton Verona) distributed a team-high three assists.

Wilmington (7-5 overall, 2-3 OAC) hosts Mount Union 3 p.m. Saturday in Ohio Athletic Conference action.
