No. 3 ONU too much for LQB

The Wilmington College women's basketball team had its season come to an end Thursday as the Lady Quakers fell to No. 3 Ohio Northern in the semifinals of the Ohio Athletic Conference tournament, 62-39.

"I thought defensively we played as well as we could have played," said head coach Jerry Scheve. "Ohio Northern is a very good basketball team. I thought the first half we had a chance. We had a good opportunity and were getting some good looks. Our effort was there in the first half, and it gave us the opportunity to get good shots."

Wilmington finishes the 2012-13 season at 15-12, and it marks the conclusion of the careers for five seniors – LeAnn Topp (New Bremen, OH/New Bremen), Shelby Kies (Maineville, OH/Kings), Emily Zimmerman (Beavercreek, OH/Beavercreek), Brianna Peters (Alexandria, KY/Campbell County) and Bria Eslick (Cleveland Heights, OH/Lutheran East).

"This group has given a lot to our program," said Scheve. "Each of them has worked hard. It's hard to play college basketball, and not easy to play for four years. This group didn't have the success as they expected. It wasn't from a lack of effort. They gave us everything we were looking for, and I hope the younger group learned from it."

Scheve added about two-year captain Topp, "LeAnn was a great leader for us and we are going to miss her tremendous leadership."

Ohio Northern seized control of the game with an 11-3 run late in the first half, and then proceeded to lock down on the defensive end in the second half. Wilmington was held to five points over the first 10 minutes of the second half, and trailed by 24 midway through the half.

Peters led the Lady Quakers with 10 points on 4-of-10 shooting, while Eslick added seven points and a team-high eight rebounds. Topp added six rebounds in her final game as a Lady Quaker.
