Lady Quakers fall to No. 4 Ohio Northern

The Wilmington College women's basketball team shot 38 percent from the field and committed 18 turnovers as the Lady Quakers fell to No. 4 Ohio Northern Wednesday, 63-48, in Ohio Athletic Conference action at Fred Raizk Arena in Hermann Court.

"They made shots," said head coach Jerry Scheve. "We knew we had to stop their post players and force their guards to make shots. We knew we would have to give up something. They don't have any weaknesses, but their post play is the strongest part of their team."

Ohio Northern scored the first nine points of the game and never really faced much pressure. The Lady Quakers cut their deficit to five points following a lay-up by senior Shelby Kies (Maineville, OH/Kings) with 10:55 remaining in the first half. Kies' basket led to an ONU timeout that enabled the Polar Bears to regroup.

"Shelby has come off the bench all year to give us a lift," said Scheve. "Bria (Eslick) has played well for the last month or so."

The lead was pushed to 14 after the timeout, and Wilmington couldn't push its deficit to under 10 points for the rest of the game.

Wilmington, which is firmly entrenched in the fourth seed of the OAC tournament, could meet the Polar Bears in the semifinals of the tournament.

Eslick (Cleveland, OH/Lutheran East) led the Lady Quakers with nine points, all in the first half, and five rebounds, while classmate Brianna Peters (Alexandria, KY/Campbell County) added eight points and four rebounds.

The Lady Quakers will wrap up the regular season 3 p.m. Saturday against Mount Union. The game will mark Senior Day for the quintet of Eslick, Peters, Kies, LeAnn Topp (New Bremen, OH/New Bremen) and Emily Zimmerman (Beavercreek, OH/Beavercreek).
