Simpkins establishes two school records

BEXLEY –  Senior Jake Simpkins set a school record for the second straight day, and the Wilmington College men's track and field team won five events to place third in the eight-team Capital Classic Saturday. Extreme weather conditions contributed to numerous teams dropping out.

Simpkins (Germantown, OH/Valley View) set a school record in the mile Friday while competing at Ohio State, and then came back Saturday to establish a new record in winning the 1000 (2:33.03).

Senior Derek Kilgo (Charlotte, NC/North Royalton) won the 60 (6.9) and the 200 (22.97) for Wilmington. Sophomore Zak Kruer (Miamisburg, OH/Miamisburg) won the pole vault (4.57 meters) and freshman Pierce Burnam (New Richmond, OH/New Richmond) was victorious in the triple jump (12.54 meters).

"We had a good weekend with the OSU and Capital meets," said Wilmington head coach Ron Combs. "It's been a tough week training-wise because of the weather. I was excited to see some guys stepping up as we head into the Conference meet."

Dominic King (Bettsville, OH/Bettsville) was the top collegiate finisher in the 3000 (9:11.33), while teammate Griffin Stith (Batavia, OH/Batavia) followed with the time of 9:20.77.

Wilmington will compete in the Ohio Athletic Conference meet Friday and Saturday at Capital University.
