Men's soccer falls in double OT

Less than three minutes from earning a draw, a mistake in the back third ultimately cost the Wilmington College men's soccer team a quality result as the Quakers fell to Heidelberg Wednesday, 2-1, in double overtime in Ohio Athletic Conference action.

The loss overshadowed another stellar performance by senior Anton Niklasson in goal as he recorded a season-high 11 saves.

"It's unfortunate," said head coach Bud Lewis. "I am very disappointed that we defended that play poorly. Ironically, the ball wasn't hit that well. That was probably the only way they are going to get a shot past Anton. The bottom line is, it went to the back of the net.

"It was a great game with two well-matched teams," Lewis added.

Wilmington got an early goal as junior Daniel Wicks scored his third goal of the season in the 11th minute. Sophomore Ethan Zimpfer made a nice feed across the box that Wicks was able to deposit in the back of the goal.

However, the lead didn't last long. The Student Princes were able to get the equalizer less than four minutes later on a corner kick.

With the game tied both teams had moments in the game where they dominated play, and looked capable of seizing control with a goal. Wilmington misfired on a couple of chances deep in the box in the last 10 minutes of regulation.

"We created really good chances," said Lewis. "Our kids showed a lot of heart, and I am proud of how we played. There is no question, in my mind, with the exception of five minutes, we are up to them."

Wilmington falls to 4-8-1 overall, 1-1 in the OAC, while Heidelberg improves to 8-2 overall, 2-0 in the OAC. The Quakers return to the pitch 4:30 p.m. Saturday, hosting Mount Union in OAC action at Charlie Gilhart Field.
