MLAX upends Fontbonne, 19-6

ST. LOUIS, MO – After a slow start, the Wilmington College men's lacrosse team found their groove and ran past the Fontbonne Griffins, 19-6, Sunday in non-conference action at Centenne Stadium.

"We started the game off pretty flat," said Wilmington head coach Domenic Marzano. "We really need to start fast from the first faceoff so we can build early momentum. Once we settled into the game, things started looking great. We played a lot smarter and unselfish from the second quarter on. Our transition game really took the game over for us and that is something we want to continue to get better at."

With game tied at two after the first period, Wilmington scored 10 of the next 12 goals to take a commanding 12-4 heading to the final period.

The second half had an increase in the physical nature of the game as 13 fouls were called. Wilmington took advantage of its man-up opportunities, going 4-for-4 in the fourth period and 6-of-10 overall.

"It got pretty physical in the second half but our guys didn't get caught up in that," said Marzano. "They were very focused and just stuck to our game. It can be easy to lose your composure in a game like that, but we responded exactly how we needed to; which led to a big fourth quarter that sealed it for us"

Sophomore Reid Delaney (Wooster, OH/Wooster) led the team with six points (four goals and two assists), while Jhordan Lang (Sunbury, OH/Big Walnut) contributed three goals and two assists.

"Reid and Jhordan really stepped it up today," said Marzano. "Reid was making some great hustle plays that led to quick goals. Jhordan had to go to attack for some of the game and did a great job. Different guys are stepping up each game and that is what we need to continue this early success."

Junior Jalen Jackson (Hilliard, OH/Bradley) added four goals and one assist, while freshman Devon Maki (Pickerington, OH/Central) contributed three goals.

Wilmington (2-0) travels to Hanover 4 p.m. Wednesday in non-conference action.
