Century Club: Hunt gets 100th win

Four players scored in double figures as Wilmington head coach K.C. Hunt picked up his 100th career victory in the Fightin' Quakers' 67-51 win over Capital in Ohio Athletic Conference action at Fred Raizk Arena in Hermann Court.

"We have a lot of weapons, and the one thing I like about our weapons is that they are willing to share the ball," said Wilmington head coach K.C. Hunt. "We make extra passes and make easy plays. We should have had more assists, but we missed a bunch of bunnies at the rim. But I like how this team is constructed and willing to share.

"Going into the break, I thought we were getting better," Hunt continued "I really didn't want to go on break because of that. We played with a real swagger tonight, and we are just going to continue to work and get better."

Wilmington improves to 7-4 overall, 4-1 in the OAC, while Capital falls to 4-7 overall, 1-3 in the OAC. The win snaps a three-game losing streak to the Crusaders.

Senior Malcolm Heard II (Wilmington, OH/Wilmington) led the way with 15 points and a team-high seven rebounds. Junior Dwight Johnson (Dayton, OH/Jefferson) added 12 points, four assists, four steals and two rebounds, while junior R.J. Leppert (Liberty Township, OH/Lakota East) stuffed the stat sheet with 12 points, five rebounds, three assists, two blocks and two steals.

Senior Christian Patterson (Cincinnati, OH/Norwood) was the final piece of the double-digit quartet with 10 points.

Wilmington threatened to run away with the victory in the first half with a 15-0 run that boosted WC to an 11-point lead, 26-15. However, Capital finished the half by scoring 18 of the final 26 points to pull to within one at the break.

"I think we kind of let off the gas," said Hunt. "It was coming pretty easy for us, and then we had three careless turnovers in a row. Then, we committed four fouls in 30 seconds to give them free points. You can't let good teams off the hook. Thankfully we were able to get our groove back in the second half, and really pull away at the end."

Part of the reason for the Crusaders ability to stay in the game was their rebounding prowess. Capital was plus-12 on the glass in the first half. They crashed the glass for eight offensive rebounds in the opening 20 minutes, which led to eight second-chance points.

The Fightin' Quakers opened the second half on a 14-4 spurt, and never looked back. Wilmington did a lot better job on the boards in the final 20 minutes, earning a plus-8 advantage.

"We had a heart to heart about rebounding at halftime," said Hunt. "I can't tell you exactly what was said, but it wasn't pretty. We kind of challenged their manhood at halftime to really just take the challenge. Rebounding is about technique, but more than anything it's about desire to just fight and go get the ball. I thought we did a much, much better job in that in the second half."

WC returns to the court 3 p.m. Saturday, hosting the John Carroll Blue Streaks.
