Ranked Marietta beats men's basketball

MARIETTA - The Wilmington College men's basketball team continued their struggles away from home as the Fightin' Quakers fell to #22 Marietta Saturday, 98-77, at Ban Johnson Arena. Wilmington is 1-3, including 0-3 against Division III competition, away from Fred Raizk Arena.

Marietta scored nine of the last 12 first-half points to seize the momentum heading into the locker room. The half featured four ties and two lead changes.

With the momentum wearing the home uniforms, the Pioneers clamped down on Wilmington with a 21-6 spurt spanning a four-minute segment early in the second half. During the run, Marietta was 5-of-6 from beyond the arc. The Pioneers were 12-of-25 from three-point range, while Wilmington was 7-of-28.

Senior Malcolm Heard II (Wilmington, OH/Wilmington) finished with 23 points on 10-of-18 shooting with five rebounds and three assists.

Junior R.J. Leppert (Liberty Township, OH/Lakota East) added 16 points and a team-high eight boards, while junior Dwight Johnson (Dayton, OH/Jefferson) dropped on 10 points for the Fightin' Quakers.

Senior Ben McGriff (Beavercreek, OH/Beavercreek) pulled down a career-high six rebounds in the loss.

Wilmington (3-3 overall, 1-1 OAC) will take the week off for exams before returning to the court 3 p.m. Saturday, traveling to Baldwin Wallace.
