ALLIANCE – The Wilmington College football team turned the ball over four times and was shut out for the first time this season, falling to top-ranked Mount Union Saturday, 62-0, at Mount Union Stadium in Ohio Athletic Conference action.

Wilmington came into the game with the best passing offense in the league, averaging 341.5 yards per game. But the Mount Union defense harassed quarterback Brandon Arehart (Wilmington, OH/Wilmington) all evening long, holding the senior signal caller to 7-of-23 passing for a career-low 64 yards. He was sacked five times, threw two interceptions and fumbled once. His favorite target, sophomore Jeremy Duncan (Cincinnati, OH/Archbishop Moeller), was held to one catch for 13 yards. Duncan came into the contest second nationally in receiving yards.

Freshman Tyler Tarnowski (Broadview Hts, OH / Brecksville-Broadview Hts.) led the team with three catches for 39 yards.

Mount Union scored on four of its first five possessions with its lone stop coming thanks to the first career interception by freshman Tommy Fox (Bremen, OH/Fairfield Union). The Quakers managed two more stops in the first half before the Purple Raiders scored late in the second quarter to take a 35-0 lead into halftime.

The Purple Raiders scored on their first six possessions of the second half – four touchdowns and two field goals – to round out the scoring.

Sophomore Zach Cumby (Coudersport, PA / Coudersport) gained a team-high 42 yards on 14 carries.

Defensively, sophomore Tarrell Starckey (Richmond, VA/Highland Springs) recorded a team-high 10 tackles, while senior Chris Ferguson (Springfield, OH/North) added eight tackles and a sack.

Wilmington (0-5 overall, 0-4 OAC) returns home 6 p.m. Saturday, hosting Baldwin-Wallace at Townsend Field.
