Soccer Players earn Academic honors

Eight Wilmington College soccer players – four men’s and four women’s - were honored for their work in the classroom, earning Academic All-Ohio honors, the Ohio Collegiate Soccer Association announced recently.

Junior Martin Holmquist (Karlstad, Sweded/Alvkulle Gymnasiet; 3.33, Business), who was a second team All-Ohio selection, earned first team Academic All-Ohio. He was the only WC player to earn first team distinction. Holmquist was just the second Wilmington player of earn OAC Defender of the Year, and was named first team All-OAC. He spearheaded a WC defense that registered four shutouts. In addition, he added two goals and one assist.

Three other players – Anton Niklasson (Ockero, Sweden / Frolunda Gymnasiet; 3.2, Business), Jeff Graham (Kettering, OH/Archbishop Carroll; 3.49, Communications) and Evan Schlagetter (Sidney, OH/Sidney; 3.47, Business) – earned second team Academic All-Ohio.

“I am very pleased that we had four players selected to the Academic All-Ohio Soccer Teams,” said Wilmington men’s head coach Bud Lewis. “Our program has really focused on high academic achievement along with outstanding athletic performance. Martin, Anton, Jeff and Evan are great players and leaders in our program on and off the field and they set the standard and are great role models for our younger players.”

On the women’s side, three players – Rachel Gutowski (Petoskey, MI/Petoskey; 3.46, Sport Administration), Bonnie Grace (Wyoming, OH/Wyoming; 3.96, Early Childhood Education), and Camille Gentile (Brownsburg, IN/Brownsburg; 3.59, Biology) – were named second team Academic All-Ohio.

Lauren Lewis (Wilmington, OH/Wilmington; 3.47, Athletic Training) was named third team.
