Baseball Opens Week With Ohio Northern on the Road and IUPUC at Home

GAME PROGRAM - IUPUC

WILMINGTON, Ohio – The Wilmington College baseball team opens its week with an Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) series at Ohio Northern University and a home contest against Indiana University Purdue University Columbus (IUPUC).

The Schedule: Wilmington travels to Ada for an OAC twinbill at Ohio Northern beginning at 1 p.m. on Tuesday before hosting IUPUC at 4 p.m on Wednesday. 

The Teams: Wilmington, Ohio Northern (ONU) and IUPUC. The Quakers enter the week with a 10-14 overall record and a 1-5 conference mark after splitting a series with Heidelberg University on Friday. The Polar Bears stand at 15-9 and an even 3-3 in league having having most recently swept Muskingum University on Friday. The Crimson enter the week with a 2-32 overall record.

The Coaches: Tony Vittorio, who formerly led the University of Dayton's baseball program for 18 seasons, is in his fifth season as Wilmington's head coach in 2023. He helped lead the Quakers to a 21-19 overall record last season. Gene Stechchulte, a former All-American at Ashland University and Major League Baseball pitcher for the St. Louis Cardinals, is in his 12th season as ONU's head coach while Scott Bicket is the head coach of IUPUC.

The Hitters: A trio of Quakers - Owen Baumann, Tyler Shaneyfelt and Dominic Depa - hit over the .300 clip with Baumann's .345 batting average leading the team. Shaneyfelt has scord 35 runs and is a perfect 25-for-25 in stolen bases while Caleb Scott has drive in a team-best 18 runs. Chase Armstrong has a .396 batting average for ONU while Nate Webb and Logan Stevens have both driven in 18 runs and have combined for nine of the Polar Bears' 19 home runs on the season. Statistics for IUPUC were not available.

The Pitchers: Aaron Boster leads the Wilmington pitching staff in innings (51), ERA (3.35), strikeouts (57) and is joined by Kaleb Stines to have tallied three victories on the season. As a staff, ONU carries a 3.93 ERA with a trio of Polar Bears - Blake Altaffer, Jack Hutchins and Vaughn Duncan - carrying ERAs of below 2.50. Altaffer and Hutchins have combined for 51 strikeouts through 24 games. Statistics for IUPUC were not available.

Series History: Wilmington is 11-19 against ONU since the 2007 season and has not faced IUPUC during that time. More information on the series history can be found by visiting the link above.
