WOMEN'S PREVIEW: Capital

WOMEN'S PREVIEW: Capital

The Wilmington College women's basketball will face a different Capital team than it defeated on December 3.

In Wilmington's 61-52 win, junior guard Simonne Gage didn't play, while senior starter Monica Heckman is no longer on the team. In addition, junior starter Kristen Thompson and freshman forward Chelsea Pia (7.2 points and 4.2 rebounds) are doubtful with injuries. Thompson was hurt in the last game, while Pia has missed the last two games.

"Simonne Gage is an outstanding point guard, certainly one of the best, if not the best, in this league," said Wilmington head coach Jerry Scheve. "She makes them much better, and they are going to be much more difficult because of that. She is great defender, and causes people problems with her defense, and runs the team extremely well."

Gage leads the team, and is third in the OAC, with 3.9 assists per game. She is adding 8.1 points per game and 3.5 rebounds for the Crusaders.

Senior Shelby Sheets is leading the team with 11.6 points. Thompson is pulling down a team-high 7.3 rebounds and is second with 10.0 points. She leads the Crusaders in field goal percentage, making 44 percent of her shots.

"Shelby Sheets is an outstanding player for them," said Scheve. "She is their leading scorer, and whatever she normally does – she seems to do a little more against us. Thompson is another Jamie Caton for them. Caton graduated, and Thompson steps in. She is a physical, strong post player, who is a big scoring threat inside."

Wilmington is coming off a 12-point loss to #19 John Carroll. Guards Courtney Tucker (Cincinnati, OH/Sycamore) and Brittaney Jefferson (Dayton, OH/Chaminade Julienne) combined for 26 of the team's 58 points in the loss.

Jefferson, who is third on the team with 9.6 points, has played well as of late. In her last three games, the sophomore guard is averaging 16.3 points.

Sophomore Mary Moyer (Martinsville, OH/Clinton-Massie) leads the team with 10.9 points and is second with 5.4 rebounds. Wilmington is 9-1 this season when Moyer scores at least nine points. She had 10 points in the win over Capital earlier this season.
