Burcham breaks record in Day One

AKRON – Four school records fell as the Wilmington College swim teams competed on the first day of the 2014 Ohio Athletic Conference Swimming Championship Thursday at the University of Akron Ocasek Natatorium.

"I am pleased with our first day of swimming," said Wilmington head coach Trip Breen. "It's a day that can be full of nerves, and we came in ready to race. We had some really good swims in the morning and got better in the afternoon. I am excited for us to keep gaining momentum after each session."

Senior Mikey Spraul (Cincinnati, OH/Princeton) had a hand in two of the records, both coming in the same race. As a part of the record-breaking 400 medley relay team, he broke his own 100 backstroke record (50.63), and earned a NCAA 'B' cut.

The quartet of Mikey Spraul, senior Corbin Hellwarth (Celina, OH/Parkway), freshman Erik Spraul (Cincinnati, OH/Princeton) and sophomore David Hawk (Edison, OH/Mount Gilead) brought home the 400 medley relay record with the time of 3:31.52. They finished third in the race.

Another relay record fell Thursday when Hawk , senior Alex Fout, freshman David Spraul (Cincinnati, OH/Princeton) and freshman Jason Prible placed fourth in breaking the 200 freestyle relay record (1:26.86). The record was one of the oldest on the Wilmington College books, getting established in 2004.

Senior Victoria Burcham (Urbana, OH/Urbana) made sure the women's got in on the record breaking when she kicked off the opening leg of the 400 medley relay. Her 100 backstroke time of 1:00.63 beat her mark of 1:02.00, set last season.

While it wasn't a school record, Hellwarth trimmed two seconds off his lifetime best in the 200 individual medley with the time of 2:02.06. Junior Mason Harris (Westerville, OH/Central) brought home the highest individual finish, placing fourth in the 500 (4:46.81).

Wilmington returns to the pool 11 a.m. Friday for the second day of the three-day championships.
