Bowen scores twice as WC averts upset

Sophomore Rachelle Bowen scored two second-half goals as Wilmington escaped Marietta's upset bid, beating the Pioneers, 2-1, Saturday at Charlie Gilhart Field.

It was a solo effort by Bowen (Xenia, OH/Xenia) that led to Wilmington's first goal, tying the game at one in the game's 53rd minute. Nearly six minutes later, she took a feed from sophomore Lauren Lewis (Wilmington, OH/Wilmington) and have the Fightin' Quakers a lead they wouldn't relinquish.

Wilmington stayed tied for fifth place with Baldwin Wallace and Mount Union at 4-3. However, the Fightin' Quakers lost to both teams so would have to finish ahead of them to qualify for the OAC tournament. All three teams are one game behind a cluster of four teams at 5-2.

It marked the final regular season home game for six seniors, Sammy Koerner (Fairfield, OH/Hamilton Badin), Rachel Gutowski (Petoskey, MI/Petoskey), Bonnie Grace (Wyoming, OH/Wyoming), Jenni Marck (Wyoming, OH/Wyoming), Paij Shelton (Hillsboro, OH/Hillsboro) and Sammi Miller.

Marietta took the lead in the 26th minute with the lone goal of the first half.

Freshman Grace Hignite (Englewood, OH/Northmont) made two saves in picking up the victory.

Wilmington (10-6-1 overall) travels to Ohio Northern 4 p.m. Wednesday in Ohio Athletic Conference action.
