The Wilmington College women's soccer had an early goal stand up behind solid defense and the goalkeeping of freshman Grace Hignite to beat Heidelberg, 1-0, Tuesday at Charlie Gilhart Field.

"Tonight was not an easy game," said head coach Steve Spirk. "Every match with Heidelberg is a tough game. We stuck to our game plan and the players earned a hard fought victory."

Senior Jenni Marck scored her team-leading sixth goal in the sixth minute, heading home a corner kick from classmate Rachel Gutowski, who leads the team with five assists.

From there, the defense took over. Wilmington recorded its second straight shutout and its fifth of the season. The Quakers have now won three straight games, and seven of the last nine.

Wilmington (8-3-1 overall, 2-0 OAC) hosts Mount Union 7 p.m. Saturday as part of an OAC doubleheader at Charlie Gilhart Field.
