GAMBIER – The Wilmington College women's soccer team used two first-half goals to open the 2013 season with a 2-1 victory over Kenyon.

The Quakers unleashed 11 shots total, six in the first half, en route to tallying both goals.

"It was a total team effort," said head coach Steve Spirk. "We played well, and as a team, we were mentally tough. It was a great victory for us. Kenyon is one of the top teams in the North Coast (Athletic Conference), and to win at their place is a great win."

Sophomore Erika Good (Miamisburg, OH/Miamisburg) took a feed from senior Rachel Gutowski (Petoskey, MI/Petoskey) from a corner kick and scored in the 23rd minute. Junior Angela Phillips added to the WC lead with her first career goal in the 34th minute, and freshman Sarah Titterington (Troy, OH/Lehman Catholic) added her first collegiate assist.

Freshman Grace Hignite (Englewood, OH/Northmont) recorded three saves in posting her first career victory.

"We had a lot of competition (for the starting goalkeeper position)," said Spirk. "We put Grace in there because she had what we were looking for; good communication, goal kicks and the capability to make big saves."

Her big play ability was on display late in the second half as she turned away a potential game-saving shot from the top of the box.

Wilmington (1-0) returns to action 3 p.m. Saturday at Denison.
