TIFFIN – It's not the number of shots you unleash, it the number you slip past the goalkeeper. The Wilmington College women's soccer team found that out the hard way Wednesday.

The Fightin' Quakers outshot Heidelberg, 20-3, including a 7-2 advantage in shots on goal – but the Student Princesses led in the only category that counted. In their first Ohio Athletic Conference road game, WC fell to Heidelberg, 1-0, at Mayer Field.

"We didn't play very smart in the first half," said WC head coach Steve Spirk. "In the second half, we gave away a ball in the back and they put it in. It was their only real look at the game. After falling down 1-0, we had chances and we just didn't put them away."

Heidelberg scored the game's only tally with a goal in the 54th minute.

With time running out, Wilmington had one final charge at coming away with the equalizer. The Quakers had three shots in the final five minutes, none better that junior Rachel Gutowski's (Petoskey, MI/Petoskey), who hit the post in the 86th minute.

After starting the season 6-0-1, WC has dropped three of its last five matches.

Freshman Sarah Stauffer (Beavercreek, OH/Beavercreek) took the loss, dropping her record to 3-3-1 on the season. She faced two shots, saving one.

Wilmington (8-3-1) returns to the pitch 1 p.m. Saturday for an OAC match with Mount Union in Alliance, OH.
