Koerner scores twice in loss to Centre

DANVILLE, KY - Sammy Koerner (Fairfield, OH/Hamilton Badin) put away a team-high of two goals in the 24-4 loss to Centre Thursday.

Centre ran away with the lead from the first face-off and racked up five unanswered goals in the first seven minutes of play. Rachel Gutowski (Petoskey, MI/Petoskey) was able to sneak in a goal for the Quakers in the first half, but Centre kept their momentum going stacking up the goals to end the first half with a 17-1 lead.

"We got off to a slow start and just couldn't close the gap after that," said head coach Brett Yenger.

Centre began the second half with much of the same tenacity in the attack pumping their lead up to 21-1 until Koerner scored her first goal of the day, which was assisted by Kelli Jo Haley (Wilmington, OH/Wilmington).

Wilmington was able to slow down the flurry of goal scoring by Centre midway through the second half and showed signs of the cohesive teamwork.

"We definitely picked it up in the second half and got a few more goals," said Yenger. "We weren't able to control all of the game, but there were moments, especially in the second half that we played as a team."

WC never gave up and pushed their attack as much as possible despite the lopsided score. The effort was evident with two late second half goals from Haley and Koerner.

"Never giving up has been a great, constant theme for us and today was no exception," said Yenger.

The Lady Quakers will play their final home game of the season, 7 p.m. April 12 as the Thiel Tomcats visit Williams Stadium.
