WOMEN'S PREVIEW: Muskingum Muskies

The Wilmington College women's basketball team travels to Muskingum 3 p.m. Saturday looking to kick start an once promising season.

Wilmington has lost six of its last eight games after opening the season with six consecutive wins. The Fightin' Muskies have lost seven straight games, and eight of the last nine.

However, Wilmington head coach Jerry Scheve is aware of the team's improvement over the course of the season.

"They appear to be playing their best basketball of the year right now," said Scheve. "They have played some real tough teams down the wire here lately. They shoot the ball really well. They're well coached, and we have to be at our best to win the game."

Sophomore Jasmine Goings is leading the team with 12.6 points per game and is second on the team with 4.5 rebounds. The ability for the team to surround her with competent shooters have made guard Goings a tough task this season.

"They shoot the ball really well, and they have a post player inside that is really difficult to stop," said Scheve. "They have good three-pointers to go with her. They are a balanced basketball team."

Senior guard Taylor Maurer is coming off a 21-point effort, on seven three-pointers, is the team's leading sharpshooter. She is averaging three long distance makes, shooting 39.1 percent. Maurer is second on the team with 10.6 points per game and junior Angela Darnley is third with 10.4 points per game.

Sophomore Mallory Taylor and freshman Olivia Besancon are making 39.4 and 44.2 percent of their three-pointers, respectively.

After a great start to the season, leading scorer Mary Moyer (Martinsville, OH/Clinton Massie) has slowed down. Despite averaging 10.1 points per game, the sophomore post has reached double figures once in the last five games. Wilmington is 7-1 this season when Moyer scores at least nine points.

Senior Courtney Tucker (Cincinnati, OH/Sycamore) leads the team with 6.4 rebounds and is second on the team with 9.9 points.
