WOMEN'S PREVIEW: Capital

WOMEN'S PREVIEW: Capital

The Wilmington College women's basketball team kicks off a critical week 7:30 p.m. Wednesday when the Fightin' Quakers host Capital at the Fred Raizk Arena in Hermann Court. Following Wednesday's game, WC travels to face Baldwin Wallace.

Capital and BW are tied for second place in the Ohio Athletic Conference, one game ahead of Wilmington.

During the first swing through OAC action, Wilmington's season-long losing streak centered around those two games. After getting beat by BW, 85-39, WC fell to Capital, 68-59. The Crusaders can expect a different team from their December meeting, but WC knows Capital is different as well.

"Both teams are vastly improved from the last time we played each other," said Wilmington head coach Jerry Scheve. "We have to play our game, do the things we do. We have to play smart defensively, take care of the basketball and get good shots. They are a sound defensive team. They don't give up each shots, and you have to work for what you are going to get."

Senior forward Jamie Caton leads the team with 12.9 points per game, and has reached double figures in 11 of the team's 18 games. She has been held to four points or less three times this season, including the teams' first meeting.

"She is an explosive offensive player that is hard to guard," said Scheve. "To guard her effectively, we need to give a lot of help and limit her pathway to the basket."

Junior Cookie Geroski is second on the team with 11.5 points, mainly from beyond the arc. She leads the team with 94 three-point attempts, which is almost three times as much as the nearest teammate – Lauren Stefancin, which has 34 attempts in 94 minutes of game action all season. In contrast, Geroski has played 634 minutes this year.

While Caton and Geroski are still the primary players for the Crusaders, the contributions off the bench of sophomores Jenna Erwin and Stefancin have diversified the Capital attack. Stefancin, who didn't play in the first meeting, has shot 65.4 percent (35-of-55) in the last four games. In a game against Baldwin Wallace, the guard scored a career-high 25 points on 7-of-8 shooting in just 16 minutes.

Sophomore Kristen Thompson (8.8 ppg) and junior Shelby Sheets (7.4 ppg) are also offensive contributors.
