WOMEN'S PREVIEW: Heidelberg

After having its four-game winning streak snapped Wednesday, the Wilmington College women's basketball team wants to keep one loss from becoming a skid as they travel to Tiffin to meet Heidelberg 3 p.m. Saturday.

In order to pull out the victory, the Fightin' Quakers will have to slow down the league's second-leading scorer, Kathleen Phillips.

"She is a special player," said Wilmington head coach Jerry Scheve. "We have to do a good job on her, but at the same time, they a lot of other weapons. We have to play great team defense. I don't think there is any question she is playing the best basketball of her career this year. I think she has improved her offensive repertoire. She can do a lot more things with the basketball now. She also moved well without the basketball, but now she is creating shots even when she is not open. She is the complete package."

Phillips, who is taking twice as many shots (260) as her nearest teammate (130), is scoring 22.4 points game in 30.4 minutes of action. She leads the team in three-point attempts (57) and free throws (112).

She isn't the only option for the Student Princes as freshman Carli Patrick is adding 11.5 points per game. Patrick takes advantage of her offensive rebounding prowess to shoot nearly 60 percent from the field. She leads HU with 5.5 boards, including a team-high 2.6 offensive rebounds.

In the first meeting, Wilmington handled the Student Princes aggressive, full-court defense to score 80 points. It is the second most points in a game this season for the Fightin' Quakers.

However, Scheve knows that the results of the first game have no bearing on this meeting.

"I think they are playing, despite the fact they lost some games her, maybe their best basketball of the year," said Scheve. "We know we are going to have to be at our best to come away with a victory. Its that time of the year where I think most of the teams are prepared for anything. Whatever changes they make, we will be ready for, and whatever changes we make – they will be prepared for."
