Shooting woes leads to upset loss

One game after shooting themselves into an improbable victory, the Wilmington College women's basketball team did the exact opposite Wednesday.

The Fightin' Quakers shot just 16.7 percent from behind the arc, and trailed the entire second half, in getting upset by Muskingum, 57-55, in Ohio Athletic Conference action at Fred Raizk Arena in Hermann Court.

The loss snaps a four-game winning streak as Wilmington falls to 10-7 overall, 7-3 in the OAC.

Wilmington was just 4-of-24 from three-point land, and shot just 19-of-53 (35.8) percent from the field. Minus the long-range attempts, WC was 15-of-29 (51.7 percent) from two-point range.

"I think without a doubt, Muskingum was enticing us into shooting three's and we took the bait," said Wilmington head coach Jerry Scheve. "I never really thought they stopped us from getting to the basket all night. I was disappointed in some of our shot selection down the stretch. I wasn't disappointed in our effort. I thought we got after it. We let them hang around, they started having a few drop in, the basket got bigger and we couldn't get enough stops in the second half."

Neither team could find much of an offensive footing in the opening half, until the Muskies turned a five-point deficit into a five-point and stole all of the momentum. While WC fought back to tie the game, Muskingum scored the final six points to take a lead into the locker room that they wouldn't relinquish.

The run carried over into the second half as MU built a 12-point bulge just four minutes into the half.

Freshman Brittaney Jefferson (Dayton, OH/Chaminade Julienne) scored seven straight during Wilmington's 10-2 run that got WC back into the game.

Every time the Fightin' Quakers seemed poised to make a run; Muskingum had an answer. Despite the shooting woes, Wilmington had one last chance after a missed free throw with 16 seconds left.

However, junior Spencer Robles (Clyde, OH/Clyde) missed a long three-pointer, and senior Haley Howard (Uhrichsville, OH/New Philadelphia) had her putback block in the waning seconds.

"I think our player understand you have to be ready to play everybody in this league," said Scheve. "We have to play together and play smart. Our players understand that. We fought to the very end tonight; we just came up short."

Howard finished with 17 points and six rebounds, while senior Makenzie Wippel (Orient, OH/Westfall) added 14 points and five rebounds. Jefferson chipped in with 12 points.

Wilmington travels to Tiffin 3 p.m. Saturday to face Heidelberg.
