WOMEN's PREVIEW: Marietta

WOMEN's PREVIEW: Marietta

No matter the record, the Wilmington College women's basketball team faces a team that is very dangerous – especially at home. The Fightin' Quakers travels to Marietta 3 p.m. Saturday.

The Pioneers (8-8 overall, 2-7 OAC) have lost four straight, but its 6-2 inside the friendly confines of Ban Johnson Arena.

"They are playing much better," said Wilmington head coach Jerry Scheve. "They beat Ohio Northern, and could have beaten Capital Wednesday. We felt when we were able to better them early this season it was a good win for us. We are going to have to be at our best tomorrow. They are a team like Ohio Northern. They have two good scoring post players and you have to keep them both under control. You can't allow the outside shooters -  (Tori) Dixon, (Jessica) Brogan or (Paige) Lamb - beat you."

In the first meeting, a 68-59 Wilmington victory, senior Haley Howard (Uhrichsville, OH/New Philadelphia) and freshman Brittaney Jefferson (Dayton, OH/Chaminade Julienne) combined for 43 points.

Marietta had three players in double figures, led by forward Heather Booth's 16 points. The Pioneers top two scorers – forward Candice Alexander (14.6 ppg) and guard Tori Dixon (12.3 ppg) – combined to shoot 6-of-18 for 20 points.

The biggest change for the Pioneers has been the development of freshmen, Emily Sabatino and Morgan Liedtke.

"They use two freshman point guards, and its natural as freshman to grow with the team – and I think both players are growing," said Scheve.
