YOUNGSTOWN - The Wilmington College women's basketball team had its five-game winning streak come to an end Sunday as the Lady Quakers stepped up in competition, falling to Division I Youngstown State, 83-52, at the Beeghly Center in non-conference action.

"We got off to a little bit of a slow start as we were playing a bit of a faster pace," said Wilmington head coach Jerry Scheve. "Once we got adjusted, I thought we did very well. We executed parts offensively and parts of our defense."

Wilmington got off to a sluggish beginning as the host Penguins scored 16 of the game's 20 points. The Lady Quakers played the remaining 13 minutes of the first half close to even and only trailed by 14 at the break.

The Lady Quakers played even for the first five minutes of the second half before Youngstown took over with a 15-5 run.

"The highlight for us was staying in the game in the second half," said Scheve. "Unfortunately, we couldn't get any closer."

Junior Makenzie Wippel (Orient, OH/Westfall) scored a season-high 11 points to lead Wilmington. Senior Brianna Peters (Alexandria, KY/Campbell County) added nine points, while senior LeAnn Topp (New Bremen, OH/New Bremen) pulled down a team-high seven rebounds.

Senior Shelby Kies (Maineville, OH/Kings) distributed a team-high four assist, marking the first time this season someone other than junior Haley Howard (Uhrichsville, OH/New Philadelphia) led the team in the category.

Wilmington (6-3) will stay on the road as they travel to Berea for an OAC game with Baldwin-Wallace 3 p.m. Saturday.
