Cox' slam lifts softball to split

The Wilmington College softball team managed a split with Baldwin Wallace in Ohio Athletic Conference action Saturday at the WC Softball Complex.

Senior Kaylee Cox (Elgin, OH/Elgin) smacked a two-out grand slam in the bottom of the seventh inning as Wilmington claimed the opener, 5-1, and then the bats went relatively silent as the Fightin' Quakers fell in the night cap, 10-2.

"Both teams played outstanding," said Wilmington head coach Beth Floyd. "Baldwin Wallace fought back with a run in the seventh, but it was really nice to see our kids fight back and win the game in the seventh."

Cox' late-inning heroics were almost unnecessary, but the Yellow Jackets tied the game at one in the top half of the seventh off senior Danielle Monnier (Houston, OH/Houston).

It was Monnier that helped get the rally going in the seventh with a base hit up the middle.

"Danielle was huge today, not only on the mound, but leading the seventh off with a base hit up the middle," said Floyd. "It was huge for us; it the ball rolling. We were able to capture the momentum and plate a couple of runs."

After a failed sacrifice attempt, freshman Kerrie Trautman (Hartville, OH/Field) singled up the middle. Sophomore Megan Warren (Grove City, OH/Grove City) moved the runners up a base with a sacrifice bunt.

One out later, the Yellow Jackets – with a base open – decided the intentionally walk senior Catlin Shilling (Waverly, OH/Waverly). A decision that Cox rendered ineffective by launching the second pitch she saw over the left field fence.

Shilling brought home Wilmington's first run with a single in the first inning that scored Warren, who opened the game with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt.

Monnier picked up the win to move to 9-8 on the season, allowing one earned run on seven hits with five strikeouts.

Baldwin Wallace scored in four of six innings, and off three of the four pitchers that entered the circle, in recording the six-inning win.

Cox gave WC the lead in the bottom of the first inning of the nightcap with a two-out single. She was the only Wilmington player with multiple hits as the Fightin' Quakers managed five hits.

A couple defensive lapses enabled the Yellow Jackets to claim the lead in the second inning. Baldwin Wallace scored two unearned runs thanks to a pair of two-out errors.

"We really struggled early on the defensive side," said Cox. "There were several plays that were turning points that kind of let the momentum shift."

Wilmington had a pair of chances for big innings, but couldn't come up with the big hit. The Fightin' Quakers had bases loaded with one out in the fifth inning and bases loaded with no outs in the sixth, but only scored one run – on a wild pitch.

Trautman (4-8) suffered the loss – allowing five runs (three earned) in two inning of work on two hits. She added two strikeouts with two walks.

Wilmington (13-16 overall, 4-8 OAC) faces Otterbein Saturday in an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader.
