Shilling goes yard as WC splits with Crusaders

BEXLEY – The Wilmington College softball team split an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader Sunday with Capital, winning the opener, 3-1, and dropping in the nightcap, 3-0.

Senior Catlin Shilling (Waverly, OH/Waverly) got the scoring going with a two-run homer in the top of the fifth inning. It was her team-high seventh longball on the season, and she finished the game 3-for-3 with two RBI, a run scored and a walk.

Capital got a run back in the bottom half of the fifth inning on a two-out single.

Senior Olivia Hutchison (Mason, OH/Mason) brought home an insurance run with a RBI single in the top of the seventh inning. Sophomore Megan Warren (Grove City, OH/Grove City) started in the inning with a double, and then Shilling was intentionally walked with one out.

Senior Kaylee Cox (Elgin, OH/Elgin) singled to load the bases ahead of Hutchison's single. With the bases loaded, WC couldn't tack on anymore additional runs.

The Crusaders were able to bring the tying run to the plate with two outs, but didn't come away with the big hit.

Senior Danielle Monnier (Houston, OH/Houston) picked up the win, scattering eight hits over seven innings with one earned run and five strikeouts.

Warren finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored, while Hutchison and junior Allie Noggle (Ashville, OH/Teays Valley) both recorded two hits.

Wilmington was limited to just one hit in the second game, but had a chance to make noise in the top of the seventh inning. Monnier and Cox worked back-to-back one outs walks to bring the tying run to plate. But, a strikeout and fielder's choice ended the threat.

Monnier allowed three earned runs in five innings of relief to pick up the loss.

Wilmington (12-13 overall, 3-5 OAC) hosts Muskingum 3 p.m. Wednesday.
