Softball ends trip with loss

FT. MYERS, FL – Olivet scored three runs in the second inning, and used it to post a 4-1 win over the Wilmington College softball team Wednesday at the Gene Cusic Classic. Wilmington's second game was called two outs before coming official with the Fightin' Quakers leading 3-0.

The Fightin' Quakers finished the spring break trip 4-5.

Four straight Comet batters reached to scratch across the first run of the inning, and then they added two more with a two-out double.

Wilmington quickly got one run back as freshman Ashley McCray (Vandalia, OH/Butler) and senior Catlin Shilling (Waverly, OH/Waverly) each singled, and with two outs, senior Stacy Lunsford scored McCray with a single up the middle. But the rally came to an end on a groundout.

Olivet added a single run in the fourth, and WC mounted one final threat in the seventh.

Junior Allie Noggle (Ashville, OH/Teays Valley) drew a one-out walk and senior Erika Lee (Blanchester, OH/Blanchester) followed with single to bring the tying run to the plate. But the threat fizzled with a pop up and strikeout.

Senior Danielle Monnier (Houston, OH/Houston) took the loss (3-2), allowing four earned runs on seven hits in six innings with 11 strikeouts. She finished the trip with 48 strikeouts in 33 2/3 innings. Shilling was the only WC player with multiple hits, going 2-for-3.

Wilmington is scheduled to host Hanover in a non-conference doubleheader 3 p.m. Thursday.
