Wartburg downs WC

FT. MYERS, FL – Wilmington dropped the opening game of the day as Wartburg got a two-out, bases clearing double in the fourth inning en route to posting the 5-2 victory.

After Wartburg took the lead with a run in the first inning, WC answered with single runs in the second and third innings. Freshman Megan Rachford (Germantown, OH/Valley View) lined a two-out single to score Shilling. A couple of baserunning miscues kept Wilmington from scoring more than once in the third.

The Lady Quakers had two runners thrown out attempting to score, but was able to take advantage of a Knights error to score the go-ahead tally.

Sophomore Allie Noggle (Ashville, OH/Teays Valley), junior Olivia Hutchison (Mason, OH/Mason) and Shilling all had two hits for Wilmington in the loss.

Sophomore Jess Clutter (Englewood, OH/Northmont) was saddled with the loss, allowing five earned runs on eight hits in four innings.

Senior Brooke Byrne scored the winning run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh inning as Wilmington wrapped up its spring break trip with the 3-2 victory over Dominican. The Lady Quakers finishes the week-long trip 8-2.

Byrne (Wilmington, OH/Wilmington) started the inning with a double – her third hit of the day - that bounced on the line and kicked out from the shortstop. Junior Nikki Tolson (Monroe, OH/Lemon Monroe) moved Byrne to third with a sacrifice bunt. The Dominican coaching staff decided to load the bases with the winning run standing on third. However, that plan went haywire as the fourth pitch of the at-bat sailed to the backstop and Byrne scampered home with the winning run.

Wilmington took the lead in the bottom of the third inning on a two-out single from Catlin Shilling (Waverly, OH/Waverly) scored freshman Alexis Smith, who started the inning with a single.

With the way junior Danielle Monnier (Houston, OH/Houston) was pitching, it seemed as if that run would be enough. Monnier, who finished the week with a 0.75 ERA, allowed two runs (one earned) on one hit over seven innings. She did walk a season-high five batters, two of which scored, to go along with four strikeouts.

The Stars knotted the game in the top half of the seventh inning following a leadoff walk. After a sacrifice bunt and throwing error, Dominican had the tying run on third with one out. The tying run scampered home on a sacrifice fly.

Shilling and junior Erika Lee (Blanchester, OH/Blanchester) each had two hits for Wilmington.
