Softball secures school record for wins

Junior Catlin Shilling drew a bases-loaded walk with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift Wilmington to the 4-3 victory in first game of their doubleheader sweep of Baldwin-Wallace enabling the Lady Quakers to set a new school record for most wins in a season. WC scored four first-inning runs and hung on to complete the sweep 6-4 in the nightcap.

Wilmington improved to 18-8 overall, 4-6 in the Ohio Athletic Conference, while BW fell to 13-9 overall, 2-4 OAC. With the victory in the opener, junior Danielle Monnier (Houston, OH/Houston) became the school's all-time wins leader. Monnier (8-3) allowed three runs (one earned) over eight innings, allowing eight hits with eight strikeouts.

Senior Kelsey Becker (Clarksville, IN/Clarkville) started the inning with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Allie Noggle (Ashville, OH/Teays Valley). Freshman Megan Rachford (Germantown, OH/Valley View) drew a two-out walk prompting BW to intentionally walk senior Brooke Byrne (Wilmington, OH/Wilmington) to load the bases.

Shilling (Waverly, OH/Waverly) fouled off consecutive 3-2 pitches before taking ball four, low and inside for the winning run.

Baldwin-Wallace took advantage of a WC error to score an unearned run in the first inning, but the Lady Quakers responded with a run of their own as Shilling scored junior Stacy Lunsford (Wilmington, OH/Clinton-Massie) with an RBI single.

A two-out single by freshman Megan Warren (Grove City, OH/Grove City) gave Wilmington the one-run lead in the bottom of the fourth. However, the lead didn't last long as BW took the lead with two in the fifth.

Byrne knotted the game in the bottom of the sixth with a two-out double. The senior finished the game 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Becker was 2-for-4. The middle of the WC lineup – Shilling and Byrne – walked five times in the opener.

It didn't take long for Wilmington to put the Yellow Jackets' starter feet to the fire as three of the first four batters reached base in the first inning. And just when it seemed she would be able to douse the simmering flame, Rachford threw gasoline on the blaze with a two-out, two-run double. Sophomore Jess Clutter (Englewood, OH/Northmont) and Becker added RBI singles to boost the WC lead to 4-0 after one.

Baldwin-Wallace got three of those runs back in the third, however, the Lady Quakers were able to stem the tide with a run in the fourth. Becker led the inning off with a double, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Lunsford. That run proved pivotal as BW pulled one run closer again in the fifth.

An unearned run pushed Wilmington's lead to two runs, which were imperative as the Yellow Jackets loaded the bases in the seventh. Monnier, who came on in relief in the sixth inning, was able to strike out the final batter to secure the sweep. It was her second save of the season.

Clutter (6-5) earned the victory, allowing four runs on six hits in five innings. She added three strikeouts for Wilmington.

Wilmington travels to Ohio Northern, winners of six straight, 3 p.m. Wednesday in an OAC doubleheader.
