Record-breaking season comes to end

ALLIANCE – A record-breaking season for the Wilmington College softball team came to an end Saturday as the Lady Quakers were swept by Mount Union, 3-0 and 5-1, at 23rd Street Field. Wilmington finished the season, 20-16 overall, 5-13 OAC. The 20 wins marked the most in school history, and it was the first winning season as well.

Despite being saddled with both losses, junior Danielle Monnier (Houston, OH/Houston) turned in the greatest single-season performance in school history. She finished with 12 wins, an ERA of 1.45 and 122 strikeouts, all single-season records. Monnier (12-7) allowed eight runs (five earned) on 16 hits in 12 innings of work in the doubleheader. She finished with nine strikeouts.

Junior Catlin Shilling (Waverly, OH/Waverly), who missed the doubleheader, finished with a school record 10 homeruns.

In the opener, the Purple Raiders scored single runs in the second, third and fourth innings, but only the run in the second inning was earned.

Wilmington managed just two hits, singles by Stacy Lunsford (Wilmington, OH/Clinton-Massie) and Kelsey Becker (Clarksville, IN/Clarksville).

Mount Union took the early lead in game two with three runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Purple Raiders added a single run in the third. The Lady Quakers had their best chance to climb back in the game in the fourth.

Olivia Hutchison (Mason, OH/Mason) started the inning with a single, and moved to second when Erika Lee (Blanchester, OH/Blanchester) was hit. Jessie Stewart (Fredericktown, OH/Highland) loaded the bases one out later with a single. After the first run scored on a wild pitch, the Wilmington rally came to a halt with back-to-back strikeouts. Wilmington wouldn't threaten again as they managed one hit over the final three innings.

Lunsford was the only player with multiple hits, recording two of Wilmington's five hits. All of the WC hits were singles.
