Quakers swept by John Carroll

Wilmington College dropped both ends of an Ohio Athletic Conference softball doubleheader to John Carroll at the WC Softball Complex Saturday afternoon.

The Blue Streaks took the opener, 8-0, and capped the sweep with a 12-5 win in game two.

Wilmington is now 2-14 in the OAC, 13-19 overall. John Carroll improves to 14-4 in the conference, 26-10 for the season.

The Blue Streaks pounded 10 hits in the opener while Wilmington managed two singles.

The Quakers had a chance to take an early lead, but JCU ace Brittany Danilov wiggled out of a runner on third, one-out jam. After that, the Quakers did not get a runner past second base.

John Carroll scored a single run in the second inning and blew the game open with two in the fourth, three in the fifth and two more in the sixth.

Brooke Byrne (Wilmington) and Kaylee Cox (Prospect/Elgin) had Wilmington's hits.

In game two, defensive breakdowns undid the Quakers as Wilmington committed seven errors that led to four unearned runs. The big damage was done by the Streaks in the second inning as seven runners crossed the plate.

Wilmington was hitless until Holly Sheets (Richwood/North Union) led off the fifth inning with a double. Kelsey Becker (Clarksville, Ind.), Elise Mariner (North Canton/Hoover), Byrne and Stacy Lunsford (Wilmington/Clinton-Massie) all contributed RBI hits. After five, the Quakers trailed, 7-4.

John Carroll, though, had a prompt answer with three runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh.

The Quakers plated their final run in the seventh Catlin Shilling (Waverly) scored Byrne with a single to left field.

For the game, Wilmington totaled eight hits with Byrne and Sheets providing two apiece.

The Quakers will close the season with an OAC doubleheader at Ohio Northern Sunday. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
