Ford fires no-hitter

FORT MYERS, Fla. — Kylie Ford fired her third career no-hitter as Wilmington College blanked Northland, 8-0, in Gene Cusic Classic action Wednesday.

Wilmington also beat Newbury, 7-0, on Wednesday and now stands at 6-2 on the spring season. The sweep came on the heels of back-to-back splits in the Sunshine State.

"I talked to the girls yesterday. You can't win a doubleheader if you don't win the first game," Wilmington head coach Beth Floyd said. "We went after Newbury hard this morning and picked up that win. We came back and played another great game to beat Northland."

Ford (South Vienna/Northeastern) was the winning pitcher in both games. The junior went four no-hit innings against Newbury before giving way to freshman Danielle Monnier (Houston). Monnier wrapped up the win with three innings of one-hit pitching.

Holly Sheets (Richwood/North Union) and Erika Lee (Blanchester) had two hits and an RBI against Newbury.

Ford was dominant against Northland, keeping the Lumber Jills off balance from the first pitch to the final out.

"Kylie is a competitor — she's good every day," Floyd said. "It's all a result of her hard work. She has a great work ethic and she is hard on herself. She makes sure that she does things right. Making sure that those little things are done right pays off in the long run. She's just solid for us every day, every game."

Ford also starred at the plate with two hits and a run scored. Brooke Byrne (Wilmington) doubled, singled and scored three runs from her leadoff spot. Stacy Lunsford (Wilmington/Clinton-Massie) and Kelsey Becker (Clarksville, Ind.) both contributed two hits and scored a run each.

Wilmington will close its stay in Florida with games against Drew and Bethany Lutheran on Thursday.
