Quakers roll past the Mount

Wilmington College raised its record to 9-3 with a sweep of Mount St. Joseph at the WC Softball Complex Saturday afternoon. The Quakers won game one, 4-0, and finished the sweep with a 6-1 win over the Lions.

"We did the three things necessary to win ball games today. We played good defense. We pitched well and we hit the ball well," Wilmington head coach Beth Floyd said. "What I really like is the way our team has meshed, how well we are playing together."

Kylie Ford (South Vienna/Northeastern) fired a four-hit shutout and freshmen Kaylee Cox (Prospect/Elgin) and Catlin Shilling (Waverly) belted two-run homers in the opener. Cox broke a scoreless tie with a pinch-hit blast in the fifth inning.

"Kaylee has come up big for us all season," Floyd said. "She's really swinging a hot bat. I'm looking forward to getting her more at-bats."

Shilling gave the Quakers a pair of insurance runs with her shot in the sixth inning.

Christine Tiell (Tiffin/Columbian) delivered a two-run single as the Quakers scored four times in the third inning of game two.

Cox and Tiell singled home runs in the sixth inning as the Quakers pushed their lead to 6-1.

Shortstop Brooke Byrne (Wilmington) was 3-for-3, scored two runs and made a key defensive play to help Danielle Monnier (Houston) wiggle out of a bases-loaded jam in the sixth inning. Stacy Lunsford (Wilmington/Clinton-Massie) had two hits and scored a run.

Monnier threw Wilmington's second four-hitter of the day to complete the sweep. The freshman also had two hits and an RBI at the plate.

"Our pitchers were outstanding. They did a good job of moving the ball and changing speeds," Floyd said.

Tiell finished the day with four hits, three RBI and two runs scored.

"Christine is just a competitor," Floyd said. "She came out today and was on fire at the plate. She was seeing the ball well and really drove the ball hard."

Wilmington will play a doubleheader at Franklin College Sunday afternoon.
