Muskies snag two from WC

Wilmington College dropped both ends of an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader to Muskingum University at the WC Softball Complex Sunday afternoon.

The Muskies won the opener, 6-1, and finished the sweep with a 9-2 victory.

Wilmington drops to 2-8 in OAC play, 13-13 overall. Muskingum is 4-6 in the conference, 11-18 for the season.

Muskingum scored a first-inning run in the opener and extended the lead to 3-0 with a pair in the third.

The lead grew to 6-0 when Muskingum plated three more runs in the fourth inning.

Wilmington averted a shutout when Lina Larsson (Skovde, Sweden/Kavelgrogymnasiet) belted a two-out pinch-hit home run in the bottom of the seventh.

The Quakers totaled seven hits, two of which were provided by starting pitcher Danielle Monnier (Houston).

Wilmington jumped to a 1-0 lead early in game two when Stacy Lunsford (Wilmington/Clinton-Massie) doubled and scored on an RBI groundout by Erika Lee (Blanchester).

Catlin Shilling (Waverly) led off the third inning with a single and scored on a Shauna Ward (West Carrollton) sacrifice fly to put the Quakers up, 2-0.

After mowing down the Muskies in the first three innings, Shilling hit hot water in the fourth. The freshman surrendered two runs and appeared to be out of further trouble, but a two-out error left the door open. Muskingum took advantage of the opportunity to plate four unearned runs and take a 6-2 lead.

The Muskies scored three more in the fifth to account for the game's final score.

The Quakers managed just four hits in the nightcap, including doubles by Lunsford and Kylie Ford (South Vienna/Northeastern).

Wilmington will return to action Tuesday when the Capital Crusaders visit the WC Softball Complex for an OAC twinbill. First pitch is slated for 3:30 p.m.
