Zak Attack: Kruer earns All-OAC

BEXLEY – Sophomore Zak Kruer picked the perfect time for the best pole vaulting performance of his career.

Kruer (Miamisburg, OH/Miamisburg) set a career PRs on four consecutive attempts, and finished second to earn All-Ohio Athletic Conference honors Friday at the OAC Indoor Championships hosted by Capital University.  He came inches away from securing the OAC championship as the Mount Union vaulter nicked the bar on his final attempt, but it stayed up.

"The first day was an up and down ride for us," said Wilmington head coach Ron Combs. "We had some good surprises and some bad surprises. Zak nearly winning the pole vault was unbelievable. He looked good last week, but he was only ranked sixth coming into the meet. (It is a) great accomplishment for him."

The men's track and field team is currently eighth after the first day of the two-day event.

The distance medley relay team of Scott Blubaugh (Circleville, OH/Logan Elm), Pierce Burnam (New Richmond, OH/New Richmond), Tyler Ahle (Bellefontaine, OH/Benjamin Logan) and Jake Simpkins (Germantown, OH/Valley View) finished fifth with the time of 10:36.42. Burnam also qualified in the 60 meter hurdles.

Senior Jake Sydnor (Owensville, OH/Clermont Northeastern) posted the top time ahead of tomorrow's 400 meter finals. He also qualified in the 200 meters, finishing eighth (22.94). Senior Derek Kilgo (Charlotte, NC/North Royalton) and freshman Tahj Sho-Johnson (Princeton, WVa/Princeton) qualified for Saturday's 60 meter final.
