Men's swimming gets first-ever win over Mount Union

With 10 events completed, all that stood between the Wilmington College men's swimming team and it first-ever win over Mount Union was a victory in the 200 meter freestyle.

The quartet of senior Mason Harris (Westerville, OH/Central), junior David Hawk (Edison, OH/Mt. Gilead), sophomore Erik Spraul (Cincinnati, OH/Princeton), and freshman Anton Blomquist (Stockholm, Sweden/Solna) delivered with a time of 1:39.99.

Wilmington handed the Purple Raiders their first Ohio Athletic Conference loss of the season with the 104-101 victory Saturday at the Wilmington Natatorium.

"All of the guys swam well today, and it wasn't just about the races we won," said Wilmington head coach Trip Breen. "It was the guys scrapping for third, fourth, fifth place positions. When it comes down to a meet like that, it's about everybody's effort. It's truly a team sport. All around great effort by the men's team today. We knew it was going to be a tough meet today. They guys came out, and they were ready, and kind of a celebration for our seniors day."

Breen said the turning point of the meet came in the sixth event as three Wilmington swimmers placed in the top four of the 100 meter butterfly. Freshman Wyatt Henderson (Baltimore, OH/Liberty Union) fought for the win, while Erik Spraul and freshman David Bellus (Upper Marlboro, MD/Northmont) recorded third and fourth place finishes. Erik Spraul and Bellus had a quick turnaround as they competed in the race before the 100 meter butterfly – the 200 meter individual medley – which Spraul won.

In addition to swimming the fastest split in the winning 200 meter freestyle relay, Hawk brought home two more victories for the Fightin' Quakers. He won the 50 meter freestyle (24.71) and the 100 meter freestyle (55.59).

Sophomore David Spraul (Cincinnati, OH/Princeton) added an event victory, winning the 200 meter freestyle (2:04.46). He added a second-place finish in the 100 meter backstroke (1:02.48).

Wilmington travels to Tiffin Saturday to face the Dragons.
