Set pieces undo men's soccer

CRESTVIEW HILLS, KY - The inability to effectively defend set pieces is continuing pop up at inopportune times for the Wilmington College men's soccer team.

The Fightin' Quakers allowed a goal off a corner kick just 95 seconds into the second half, snapping a 1-1 tie and leading to the 2-1 defeat to Thomas More in non-conference action at the Bank of Kentucky Stadium Tuesday. Wilmington is now 0-2-1 in their last three games heading into Ohio Athletic Conference action 7 p.m. Saturday hosting Marietta.

"That is our biggest frustration right now," Wilmington head coach Bud Lewis said about the team's struggles with set pieces. "It's something we have to turn around; our ability to defend and score off set pieces. We are very capable of it. We have guys that can serve the ball well, and guys that can finish well.

"The second goal was real disappointing to give up," Lewis added. "It was a set piece, and it was a communication mistake. We gave up a set piece goal that is very defendable, and that is now three games in a row we've allowed a goal off set pieces; and that is unacceptable."

Wilmington got off to a fantastic start as senior Evan Schlagetter (Sidney, OH/Sidney) scored 6:19 into the game. He took a throw-in, settled it and blasted it past the TMC keeper.

However, that we really the last chance dangerous opportunity until a last gasp free kick with 2.1 seconds remaining in the game.

"We came out really strong and had a good first 30 minutes," said Lewis. "We got a nice goal and that was good to see us be rewarded for nice play. We didn't create a lot of other dangerous chances, and that is a concern. Once we started to fatigue a little bit, we started to break down. The last 10 minutes of the first half they really put us under a lot of pressure."

Senior Daniel Wicks (Cincinnati, OH/Reading) allowed two goals on eight shots, making six saves in the loss.

Senior Martin Holmquist (Karlstad, Sweden / Alvkulle Gymnasiet) and Schlagetter combined for half of Wilmington's shots.
