Too many opportunities came back to bite the Wilmington men's soccer team as Birmingham Southern scored two goals in 33 seconds to record the 2-0 victory Friday in the 2013 Kiwanis Classic at Charlie Gilhart Field.

"We missed some good chances," said head coach Bud Lewis. "It's a game we could have won, but we couldn't put any shots away. We have lost to three good teams, but two of those losses were to teams that we are at least as good as."

The loss highlighted one of Wilmington's early season difficulties. In the Quakers' three defeats, they have allowed eight of their nine goals in the last 15 minutes of the contest. On Friday, the Panthers scored at 83:30 on a shot from 40 yards out that seemed to befuddle the Wilmington goalkeeper Anton Niklasson.

Wilmington applied immense early pressure to its visitor early with three quality scoring chances, including a Henrik Hornness opportunity in the middle of the box. While the Fightin' Quakers seemingly controlled the pace, it took several saves by Niklasson to keep the game scoreless.

"Anton has two or three outstanding saves," said Lewis. "We just made two big mistakes."

Niklasson (0-3) recorded five saves on the game as Birmingham Southern unleashed 15 shots with seven coming on frame.

Freshman Markus Tornberg and Hornnaess combined for half of Wilmington's 14 shots as Tornberg had two of the five shots on goal.

Wilmington returns to the pitch 7:30 p.m. Saturday in the second game of the Kiwanis Classic against Wittenberg. The Tigers scored with one second remaining to beat Marietta in the first game of the Kiwanis Friday.
