Rochester too much for Quakers

ROCHESTER, NY – It wasn't the type of homecoming that Wilmington head coach Bud Lewis hoped for as the Wilmington men's soccer team fell to Rochester Friday, 5-1. The Yellow Jackets were first in the preseason BennettRank, a computer-driven service.

Friday's game marked the first time Lewis took any of his teams to the place in which he starred as a high school player at Penfield High School. As a senior, Lewis led the Patriots to a state championship.

Rochester scored four goals in the last 21 minutes transforming a tied game into a four-goal victory. The flood gates seemed to open as a missed clearing opportunity enabled the Yellow Jackets to essential secure the game-winning goal.

"We learned a lot today," Lewis said of his short-handed bunch. "It was a very physical game. We just got really tired."

Wilmington played without Henrik Hornnaess (Brumunddal, Norway/Hamar Katerdralskole), Taylor Estes (Reading, OH/Reading) and Taylor Henderson (Cincinnati, OH/Mariemont), while losing Ben McMahon (Loveland, OH/Little Miami) early in the first half and Marcus Tornberg (Stockholm, Sweden/Hersby Gymnasium).

Junior Erik Hammar (Stockholm, Sweden/Ava Gymnasium) tallied Wilmington's lone goal, knotting the game at one right before the end of the first half.

The Fightin' Quakers (0-1) return to the pitch noon Sunday as they face St. John Fisher in Rochester's Flower City Classic
