Jackson scores lone goal in loss

OLIVET, MI – The Wilmington College men's lacrosse team opened the 2014 season an 11-1 non-conference loss to Olivet Wednesday.

Sophomore Jalen Jackson (Hilliard, OH/Bradley) tallied the only marker for the Fightin' Quakers, scoring with 3:13 left in the game.

Even in defeat, the story of the game was the stellar play of freshman goalkeeper Paul Koerbel (Maineville, OH/Kings), who recorded 22 saves.

"Paul Koerbel stood on his head," said Wilmington head coach Domenic Marzano. "We played very well, and beyond his years. The kid absolutely bailed us out on several occasions. However, you can't continue to rely on your keeper to bail you out."

While in the end it's the number of goals that count, Wilmington was able to generate its fair share of opportunities. Marzano noted WC had at least five one-on-one scoring chances and failed to even get the shot near the cage. The Fightin' Quakers reeled off 15 shots, seven off which were on goal.

Wilmington wasn't very efficient in its clearing attempts, converting less than half (14-of-29) and didn't convert any man-up chances (0-of-3). On the bright side, they stymied all five of Olivet's man-up opportunities.

The Fightin' Quakers return to the field 4:30 p.m. Thursday with a non-conference road game at Alma, and Marzano already has his eye on some changes.

"All of us, top to bottom, need to re-focus on getting better daily, and not focusing on wins," he said. "If we do the things we need to do to get better, the wins will come."
