Alex Gossard (Galloway, OH/Hilliard Bradley) scored twice and assisted on another as the Quakers were defeated by Mount St. Joseph 16-4 Wednesday at Williams Stadium in Wilmington.

The Lions of Mount St. Joseph pulled the carpet right from underneath the Quaker's feet from the very first possession, scoring less than two minutes into the game. It was all down hill from that moment as the Lions seemed to possess the ball for the entire first quarter as they didn't allow the Quakers a chance to attack until the score was 4-0 in favor of the Mount.

Wilmington seemed to be on defense for a majority of time in the first quarter and struggled at times to clear and get in to offensive sets.

Jalen Jackson (Hilliard, OH/Bradley) was able to breakthrough the Lion defense to start off the second quarter and finally got the Quakers on the scoreboard at 5-1. Jackson's goal wasn't enough to disrupt the Lion's momentum as they reeled off another five unanswered goals in the second quarter to pull away in to the half with a comfortable lead of 10-1.

The third quarter saw the Quakers show signs of pride and fight in their play not to just roll over and give up on the game despite the disparate scoreline they faced. Head coach Domenic Marzano's squad came out after the halftime whistle winning some face-offs and getting some offensive looks they weren't able to gain in the first half. The Quakers played with some grit on the defensive end and came away with a few stops. The third quarter saw the Quakers match up with the Lions ending with each team scoring two goals a piece to end the quarter.

"We talked at halftime about getting physical with them (Mt. St. Joseph) and putting a body on their attackers and let them know they weren't just going to impose their will so easily on us in the physical sense," said Marzano.

The Lions proved to be a much more seasoned and experienced squad when they added four more goals in the fourth quarter and dominated much of the attacking play ending the game with a final score of 16-4.

"I was not content in the final scoreline, but it was good to see signs of life from my guys in the third quarter when it would have been easy for the team to just give up and quit on the game after only being able to put away one goal in the half...we started to win some face-offs and didn't back down," said Marzano.

Wilmington returns to action next week when they visit OAC rival, Otterbein, 7 p.m. Tuesday in Westerville.
