MENS PREVIEW: Marietta

MENS PREVIEW: Marietta

The hottest team in NCAA Division III men's basketball is on tap for Wilmington College Saturday as No. 3 Marietta hosts the Fightin' Quakers.

"We are one of a few teams that has played them tough," said Wilmington head coach K.C. Hunt. "Obviously they have found ways to win games, 20-0 is 20-0. There are three divisions in NCAA men's basketball, and there are two undefeated teams, Kentucky and Marietta. We have big challenge on the road, and quite frankly, we are looking forward to it."

Wilmington dropped a 71-69 decision to the Pioneers on December 6. Three players – senior Dwight Johnson (14), freshman Christian Jones (13) and John Righter (11) – all reached double digits in the loss. Junior Eddy Grenert and sophomore Keith Richardson finished with 14 points each to lead Marietta.

The Pioneers have four players averaging double figures, led by senior Garrett Stephenson. The 6-7 forward leads the team with 13.0 points and is second with 7.4 rebounds. Grenert leads the team with 8.3 rebounds, and is fourth on the team with 10.2 points.

Junior RaNeal Ewing second on the team with 11.9 points and is averaging a team-high 2.8 assists. Junior Luis Garcia leads Marietta with 29 made three-pointers, and is averaging 10.7 points.

"They are deep at all positions," said Hunt. "They have multiple guys that can get 20 on you at anytime. Looking at their stats, that has been the case. They have weapons everywhere, and they are a mentally tough team with a 'chip on their shoulder' swagger. We are going to have to match that toughness on Saturday and see what we can do."
