Wilmington claims Zimmerman Tournament crown

SPRINGFIELD, OH – With the game hanging in the balance, senior Jonathan Bibbs came up with the biggest plays enabling the Wilmington College men's basketball team to claim the 2014 Zimmerman Memorial Tournament with a 72-69 victory over Waynesburg Tuesday at the Pam Evans Smith Arena in the HPER Center on the campus of Wittenberg University.

On three straight possessions, Bibbs (Dayton, OH/Chaminade Julienne) was in the middle of the action. First, with Wilmington up by two with less than a minute remaining, the senior forward's steal forced an intentional foul. Then, he recorded a block on the defensive end. However, he saved the best for last. The Fightin' Quakers' lead was just one point with 31 seconds left, and he pulled down an offensive rebound off a missed free throw and converted a lay-up. He missed the free throw that would have allowed Wilmington to have a two-possession lead, and WC held on as the Yellow Jackets missed four three-pointers in the final 23 seconds.

"He made the two huge plays of the game," said Wilmington head coach K.C. Hunt. "I thought his will was the best it has been during his entire career. He was a difference maker. If we are going to be where we want, which is competing for a championship, Jonathan Bibbs needs to be a big factor for us – like he was tonight. "

Ironically, Tuesday's game looked similar to Monday's victory as WC fell behind by double figures early with their opponent making open three-pointers.

"It was a similar script," said Hunt. "He came out flat early and they hit some three-pointers that weren't well guarded. But, we buckled down in the last 28, 30 minutes. I told the team before the game that the tougher team was going to win the game. We executed down the stretch and made the plays we needed to make to pull out the win."

Four different players scored as Wilmington scored 11 of 12 points late in the half to cut its 13-point deficit to three points, and the Fightin' Quakers only trailed by four at the break. WC continued its momentum early in the second half to pull even just three minutes into the half.

Waynesburg quickly turned the tide on the Fightin' Quakers, building an eight-point lead. Senior Dwight Johnson (Dayton, OH/Jefferson) capped both ends of a 15-4 spurt which Wilmington flipped its deficit into a lead. He hit back-to-back layups to jumpstart the rally, and then his three-pointer put a bow on the run.

But the Yellow Jackets didn't go away, and reclaimed the lead briefly before Bibbs took matters into his hands.

Tournament MVP R.J. Leppert (Liberty Township, OH/Lakota East) finished with 13 points, six rebounds, two assists and two blocks, while freshman Christian Jones (Hamilton, OH/Hamilton) led the team with 14 points. Jones was also named to the All-Tournament team for his efforts in the two-game event.

Johnson contributed 13 points, a team-high seven rebounds and a team-high four assists. Bibbs and sophomore John Righter (Pataskala, OH/Licking Height) tallied 10 points each.

Wilmington (4-7) won't return to the hardwood until 3 p.m. Saturday, January 10 at Mount Union.
