MEN'S PREVIEW: Marietta Pioneers

When a team in struggling to find its way defensively, facing an unbeaten team with numerous weapons – inside and out – isn't usually a way to fix what ails them. However, for the Wilmington College men's basketball team, that is what they will be facing Saturday.

Wilmington hosts unbeaten rival Marietta 3 p.m. at the Fred Raizk Arena in Hermann Court. It will be the middle game of the Ohio Valley Hoops Classic.

"Marietta is a very good basketball team," said Wilmington head coach K.C. Hunt. "They are deep, they have shooters and talented post players. They are a tough challenge for us."

Junior guard Luis Garcia leads a trio of double-figure scores for the Pioneers. His ability to shoot from range and attack the rim, make him a difficult to defend. He is tied for the team lead with nine three-pointers and has made all 18 of his free throw attempts. Although he is the team's leading scorer, Garcia has only led the team in scoring once this season.

Forward Garrett Stephenson is a force in the middle with 12.0 points and 7.5 rebounds, while Eddy Grenert is averaging 10.5 points and 9.5 rebounds. They are part of the reason the Pioneers are ranked in the Top 10 nationally in rebounding margin.

"They attack the glass on both ends of the floor," said Hunt. "They send four, five guys to the boards. We are going to have to compete and finish the possessions with a rebound. We are not sustaining possessions all the way through."

Senior R.J. Leppert is leading Wilmington with 14.8 points and 6.2 rebounds, while backcourt mates Dwight Johnson and Law Williams are contributing 11.8 and 11.6 points, respectively. However, Hunt admits the team needs more, top to bottom.

"We have a lot of guys not competing on the highest level, seniors included," said Hunt. "We have guys who have never been in this situation, and it's a learning curve."
