GRAND RAPIDS, MI - The Wilmington College men's basketball team stood toe-to-toe with third ranked Illinois Wesleyan, but ultimately the Titans were too much for WC as it fell, 74-65, in the opening round Holland Sentinel/Russ DeVette Tournament Friday on the campus of Hope College.
Wilmington (4-4) will play Lake Forest 1 p.m. Saturday in the consolation round of the tournament. The Foresters fell to host Hope 78-66 in the other opening round contest.
Four players reached double figures in the loss as junior R.J. Leppert (Liberty Township, OH/Lakota East) tallied a team-high 13 points on 6-of-14 shooting. Three others players - Malcolm Heard II (Wilmington, OH/Wilmington), Ben Vonderhaar (Cincinnati, OH/Colerain) and Christian Patterson (Cincinnati, OH/Norwood) - all recorded 10 points.
Patterson, in his first career start, finished 4-of-4 from the field - including 2-of-2 from beyond the arc. Heard pulled down a team-high eight rebounds.
Junior Dwight Johnson (Dayton, OH/Jefferson) finished with eight points, a career-high seven boards with five assists.
The Fightin' Quakers managed to shoot just 5-of-22 from three-point range, and was even in the rebound margin against the bigger Titans.
