Preseason injuries could have long-term benefit

WILMINGTON – Wilmington College men's basketball coach K.C. Hunt is hoping some of the injuries his team had to battle through since the beginning of practice will pay off as the team embarks on the 2012-13 season that kicks off 3 p.m. Friday at Allegheny College's Greg Richards Memorial Tip-Off Tournament against McDaniel.

"The preseason was pretty solid other than the fact we had some different injuries," said Hunt. "But, we got to see different guys step up. Throughout the season you are going to face adversity whether its injuries, little dings or foul trouble. We got to grow as a group, now its time for us to get healthy."

For the most part, Hunt will have his key parts at his disposal this weekend. In addition, he plans on utilizing up to 15 players in the opening two games as the Quakers look to settle on a rotation of around 12 players.

Regardless of who is on the court, WC knows what it is trying to achieve.

"At our core, we will apply defensive pressure to take you out of what you want to do," said Hunt. "We will share the ball offensively and play inside out. Ultimately, we are being judged by the NCAA committee."

One of the aspects Hunt likes about this year's team will be the ability to play different styles of basketball. They have the personnel to use a bigger lineup or really speed the game up by utilizing a four-guard lineup.

In preparing for the Green Terror, Wilmington has decided to really focus on their play for a variety of reasons.

"In Division III, there are a lot of unknowns early in the season," said Hunt. "From a roster standpoint, they are young team with a large group of freshmen. We have to be concerned with ourselves. Play the way we know how, and we will be alright."

Along with host Allegheny, the University of Pittsburgh-Titusville is the other team in the tournament.
