Hairston joins 212 others in setting World Record

A routine trip to the hospital turned into a family nightmare for Wilmington head football coach Stacey Hairston and his family last season.

Then six-year old son Jayden was diagnosed with cancer and lost a kidney during the healing process. Through the heartache for the family, The Dragonfly Foundation stepped in to make sure the process worked as smooth as possible.

"When my wife took him to the hospital, we didn't know the extent (of the illness)," said Hairston. "When you go to the hospital, you don't think to pack. Our world was turned upside down and The Dragonfly Foundation was there for us. The Dragonfly Foundation deals with families on a regular basis, and they sent my wife a care package. I had heard of them, but I didn't know the extent (of what they did)."

This past Friday, in conjunction with the Kings Island Kick Cancer event and The Dragonfly Foundation, Hairston was joined by 212 other people in setting a new World Record.

To bring awareness to the plight of childhood cancer, 213 people had their heads shaved simultaneously. The 213 participants established a new mark for the Guinness Book of World Records.

"I thought it was very important (to participate) because of the amount of support the Dragonfly Foundation showed by family," said Hairston. "Anything that I can do, I am all for because I know, by example, their benefits."

Sports Information Director J. Ameer Rasheed and incoming football freshmen Lawrence Green and Pierce Burnam, along with Hairston's other son, Jonathan, also got their head shaved Friday.

The Dragonfly Foundation provides distractions from the emotional, physical, and financial toll of cancer and bone marrow transplants. We also work to establish connections and community at a time when patients, siblings, and caregivers feel the most alone and isolated.
